About this Event
Introduction to Smart Home Control & Automation
(1) HSW/CEU
Session 1
Learn how to use technology to control an entire home, avoiding the mish-mash of applications that form the often frustrate, particularly in DiY systems.
Course Topics
• Why home control and automation are in demand, and an exploration of the types of systems available.
• Features and benefits of a control and automation system, and differentiating factors.
• Considerations for the designer and architect when specifying systems, and why these will matter to your clients and designs.
• System design guidelines, how to work with an integrator to implement these designs properly.
From Vision to Reality: Technology Meets Design
(1) HSW/CEU
Session 2
Do you edit pictures of your projects to remove unsightly hardware? Do you wish that your designs could look more like the ideal every day? Discover how to “Photoshop” your real-world designs through correct planning and selection of materials and fixtures.
Course Topics
• Explore the design impact of technology across the project, and how technology competes with design when not executed properly.
• Designate and discern between which technology elements are permanent, which are transitional, and which are temporary.
• How to “Photoshop” in real world design to create harmony in your spaces.
• Explore how designed spaces are impacted by the prevalence of modern technology.
Biophilic Lighting Design: Tour of the Lutron Experience Center
(1) HSW/CEU
Session 3
Experience the full capabilities of a modern lighting system designed on Biophilic principals. Through various vignettes we will observe the impact of changes in color temperature, vibrancy, and color rendering in various professional and residential environments. Following this we will discuss how such systems are implemented, and the advantages of pairing with a lighting control system and automated shading.
Course Topics:
Identify desirable control mechanisms for biophilic lighting, and define how they differentiate from traditional lighting control systems.
Discuss the health benefits of biophilic lighting systems for occupants in terms of commercial productivity, residential relaxation, and general wellness.
Observe how color temperature and vibrancy can impact the appearance of materials in a space, the difference between color temperature and vibrancy and how high accuracy can allow for better specification and preservation of the designed aesthetic.
Discuss the various measures for measuring and specifying light with a particular focus on modern LED systems. This will includer vibrancy, CRI, and color temperature with a comparison between typical natural and artificial lighting.
How Good is Good Enough

Session 4
Light effects the look and feel of every space, and by using flexible, energy-efficient LED light sources you can create comfortable, beautiful and dynamic lighting environments. But as LED technology continually adapts and improves, it can be difficult to stay on top of the latest innovations, and to make sure you’re getting the best performance.
You are probably familiar with color rendering, but what aboutTM-30, the new method for evaluating color rendition? And what’s the difference between tunable white, spectral tuning and warm dimming?
In this course, we’ll break this down and give you simple tips on how to effectively evaluate different LED light sources to offer your clients an enhanced lighting experience.
Course Topics:
Understand light quality metrics
Understand LED quality metrics
Understand how to compare LED light sources
Understand different approaches to light mixing
