Raymond Pepi, founder and principal of Building Conservation Associates, Inc., (BCA) will discuss a range of technical issues related to architectural materials and historic masonry building construction viewed through the lens of BCAs interior and exterior restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Mr. Pepi will be joined by Sarah Rosenblatt, Conservator at BCA, to discuss the importance of documenting the original design intent of an historic building, the evolution of its as-built form, and an alterations chronology to inform the restoration approach; mechanisms of loss of material integrity and performance; fundamental physical and chemical properties of building and repair materials and how these relate to material performance; the identification and selection of appropriate materials for repair and restoration of historic masonry buildings; preservation and replication using substitute materials; and technical issues related to cleaning the historic masonry facades.
